FIAF- French Institute Alliance Francaise Annual Gala

ISABELLE HUPPERT PRESENTED BOB WILSON WITH 2009 TROPHEE DES ARTS AT FIAF ANNUAL GALA IN NEW YORK

Last Monday, November 2nd, 2009, French actress Isabelle Huppert presented to the theater and visual artist Bob Wilson with the 2009 Trophée des Arts at the Plaza for the annual French Institute Alliance Francaise (FIAF) Gala.

Huppert, who was awarded the Trophée des Arts in 2003, told the audience of 450 guests how happy she was to publicly express her love to Wilson who has influenced both her personal life and career.

Speaking directly to Wilson, Huppert said: “I want to tell everyone here how important this moment is for me and how much I enjoy being seen by you, directed by you and loved by you. It is a privilege for an actress to meet someone like you.”

“As an actress, I never feel as free as when I work with Bob,” Huppert added. “With him, theatre becomes a playground of infinite liberty.”

Bob Wilson, whose production of Quartett with Isabelle Huppert based on German playwright Heiner Müller's adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Laclos) will be performed at BAM from November 4 to 14, recalled how France discovered his work and established his career.

"The extraordinary contribution that France has made to culture is an example for all of us,” Wilson said in his acceptance speech. “The French gave a home to Stravinsky, to Picasso, to me and others. There is a cultural policy, a doctrine there that governs the country and that allows the citizen to support creation and discover what is happening across the world (…) France: thank you for your leadership. Yes we can!" Wilson concluded.

Earlier, Bernard Poussot, CEO and Chairman of Wyeth –the pharmaceutical company whose 68B USD merger with Pfizer has now been completed- was awarded the 2009 Pilier d’Or. Former honorees include Jean-Bernard Lévy of Vivendi and Pierre Bellon of Sodexo.

The evening, co-chaired by Alain Coblence, Lorenzo D. Weisman and Vice-chairman David Braunschvig, raised more than 650,000 USD which will support the cultural and educational programs of FIAF while also promoting a better understanding between the French and American people. Isabella Rossellini, French Ambassador to the United States Pierre Vimont, French Consul General of New York Philippe Lalliot, Françoise Gilot, Christine Cachot, designer Amanda de Montal, Muffy Flouret, Nathalie Kaplan, Marie-Noëlle Pierce, and Clemence von Mueffling also attended the benefit.

ABOUT FIAF
Founded in 1898, the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) is the leading French language and cultural center in the United States. Its mission is to be the innovative cultural and educational destination for New Yorkers eager to explore the diversity of French cultures.

FIAF presents a wide range of sophisticated programming in both French and English, offering films, lectures, art exhibitions, and live performances of music, theater, dance, and more throughout the year in the FIAF Gallery, Florence Gould Hall, Le Skyroom, and Tinker Auditorium.

Each fall, the inter-disciplinary contemporary arts festival Crossing the Line presents boundary-breaking works by artists who are transforming cultural practices on both sides of the Atlantic. The spring brings World Nomads, a festival dedicated to exploring the exchange of ideas, artistic expression, and style throughout the Francophone world.

FIAF’s historic building, recently renovated and decorated by the well known theater set designer Richard Peduzzi, is a fully active educational and cultural New York institution. The Haskell Library, designed by renowned architect Michael Graves, houses the most comprehensive collection of French works in the United States. The Language Center, with 6,000 students, is also the largest in the country and offers instruction in French at all levels.
