GOTO's 11th Annual Halloween Costume Party: Raise Some Hell For A Heavenly Cause

GOTO's 11th Annual Halloween Costume Party: Raise Some Hell For A Heavenly Cause

The weather outside was frightful, but Giving Opportunities To Others’ 11th annual Halloween Ball was as delightful as ever.

Costumed revelers braved a freak October snow storm that was more trick than treat, packing the Broad Street Ballroom to Raise Some Hell for a Heavenly Cause despite the freezing temperatures.

The October 29th event sold out with more than 600 tickets purchased. Partygoers boogied from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. to a DJ while enjoying a five-hour open bar filled with top shelf spirits.

Thanks in part to the event’s generous corporate sponsors – Lagunitas Brewing Company and Palm Bay International Fine Wines and Spirits, which donated delicious IPAs and specialty Aperol and Prosecco cocktails for the event -- more than half of every ticket will support GOTO’s mission of enriching the lives of underprivileged NYC-area students through the arts. The event raised nearly $20,000 dollars for GOTO’s scholarship fund.

Since 2001, GOTO has provided deserving middle school students from the five boroughs with scholarships to attend Appel Farm summer arts camp. To date, GOTO has raised an excess of $1 million for its scholarship fund, providing more than 130 students with the opportunity to learn from working visual artists, filmmakers, dancers and musicians for three consecutive summers at Appel Farm’s bucolic 176-acre facility in Elmer, New Jersey.

Such arts programs are more important now than ever before. The recession and anemic economic recovery of the past several years has dried up funding for arts education, particularly at the elementary and middle school level. About nine percent of NYC middle schools do not provide any arts education, according to a survey by the New York City Public Advocate’s Office. The most recent annual arts in school report by the NYC Department of Education revealed that roughly 63% of NYC-area middle schools do not provide instruction in all four arts disciplines: dance, music, theater and visual arts.

As Victor Burgos, the father of a recent GOTO scholar, said at one of our annual events: “Schools have been cutting arts, music, shop – anything that has to do with creativity. When I went to school, you had that, and now that is all disappearing. This program is a way of keeping that alive. It is something that our kids desperately need and it is vital to their enhancement of themselves as creative human beings.”

GOTO’s importance isn’t limited to its impact on our scholars. The organization, along with its Boston arm, is entirely run by volunteers. The rare structure gives members a unique opportunity to become deeply involved in charity work and give back to their communities, as well as ensures that more of every event dollar goes straight to GOTO’s cause.
