Lymphoma Research Foundation Gala

Lymphoma Research Foundation Gala Honors Top Lymphoma Specialists and Altruistic Patient Advocate

Over $560,000 Raised to Support Lymphoma Research

The Lymphoma Research Foundation’s (LRF) 2009 Gala held on October 6, included silent and live auctions to raise funds for lymphoma-focused research, while honoring the hard work and dedication of its world-renowned Scientific Advisory Board Leadership and a steadfast supporter of LRF’s Health Care Provider Grant Program. To date this year, the Gala has brought in over $560,000 and contributions are still coming in.

The Gala’s theme was “Milestones”; a celebration of how LRF has evolved since it was formed in 2001, expanding its patient programs and medical research, and serving a growing number of communities with the expansion of 22 chapters.

Past, present and future leaders of LRF’s Scientific Advisory Board were presented with the Freundlich Leadership Award. Recipients of this award included Chairman, Richard I. Fisher, MD, Chair Elect, Bruce D. Cheson, MD, FACP, Past Chairman, Oliver W. Press, MD, PhD and Founder, Joseph R. Bertino, MD.

The Freundlich Leadership Award, named after Barbara and Jerry Freundlich, founders of Cure for Lymphoma (CFL) – one of LRF’s predecessor organizations, was established to honor remarkable leaders who through their extraordinary effort, assist LRF in its mission to eradicate lymphoma and serve those touched by this disease.

David C. Wiener was presented with the Ellen Glesby Cohen Leadership award for his generous and unwavering support of the volunteer-run “Health Care Provider Grant Program”, which raised $200,000 to assist 460 patients with their health care provider expenses. This program has enabled families to focus on battling the disease, instead of their finances.

The Ellen Glesby Cohen Leadership Award was established in 2001 to honor Ellen Glesby Cohen, founder of Lymphoma Research Foundation of America, LRF’s other predecessor organization. The award celebrates Ellen’s passion for finding a cure, and her persistence in rallying every friend, physician, and acquaintance to improve the quality of information and services for caregivers, and to raise finances to support clinical trials and research.

An audience comprised of doctors, patients, business professionals and lymphoma advocates listened to an update on developments in research, acceptance speeches and a moving address by lymphoma survivor Elizabeth Cohen whose mantra “I believe in research,” elegantly illustrated the reason behind and importance of the evening’s festivities.
