The Couture Council of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) Luncheon

The Couture Council of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) honored Dries Van Noten with the 2009 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion at its fourth annual

benefit luncheon at New York City’s Cipriani 42nd Street on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 11:30 am. Golden Globe nominated actress Maggie Gyllenhaal presented the award.

Once again, the Couture Council’s annual luncheon was the first event of New York Fall Fashion Week. FIT president, Dr. Joyce F. Brown, welcomed guests, and Simon Doonan, Barneys’ famously witty creative director emceed. The event was hosted by founding Couture Council chairmen Yaz Hernandez, Liz Peek and Sarah Wolfe, and founding luncheon chairman Charlotte Moss. Also in attendance were members of the Couture Council Artistic Committee including Glenda Bailey, Hamish Bowles, Nina Garcia, Daphne Guinness, Iman, Carson Kressley, Isabel and Ruben Toledo, and Diane von Furstenberg, as well as junior chairmen Amanda Hearst, Samantha Thompson, Alexis Tobin, and Whitney Wolfe.

Guests included: Adolfo, Fabiola Beracasa, Lisa Cashin, Linda Fargo, Thelma Gordon, Audrey Gruss, Alexandra Lebenthal, Phillip Lim, Catie Marron, Ghislaine Maxwell, Lorry Newhouse, Elizabeth Peyton, Angel Sanchez, Arnold Scaasi, Lizzie Tisch, Barbara Tober, Lauren Veronis, Bettina Zilkha and Ambassador Herman Portocarero, Consul General of Belgium in New York.

“Dries Van Noten creates clothes of extraordinary beauty and originality,” said Dr. Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of The Museum at FIT. “His sense of color, print, and decoration are unequaled, and his clothes are not for one season. Like works of art, they continue to speak to us across time and space. He has created a unique personal signature, but at the same time, he facilitates the wearer’s individual sense of style.”

“As the only museum in New York City dedicated to the art of fashion, The Museum at FIT is a vital resource for the creative and business worlds, as well as for the fashion-loving public,” said Dr. Brown. “While its exhibitions are rooted in scholarship, they are beautiful and accessible, attracting 100,000 visitors a year from around the world.”

The Couture Council, which was created in 2004, has become an integral part of the museum and a force in the fashion world. Its annual Artistry of Fashion Award furthers FIT’s deep connection with the fashion industry. Dr. Brown added, “We are very grateful to the Couture Council for the important work it does to support the mission of The Museum at FIT.”

Dries Van Noten was chosen to receive the 2009 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion by the Couture Council Advisory Committee, an independent group consisting of curators, editors, and retailers. Members include Pamela Golbin, curator of the Musée de la Mode; Akiko Fukai, director and chief curator of the Kyoto Costume Institute; Glenda Bailey, editor-in-chief of Harpers Bazaar; Hamish Bowles, European editor-at-large of Vogue; Ken Downing of Neiman Marcus; Linda Fargo of Bergdorf Goodman; and Julie Gilhart of Barneys New York, among others. The Couture Council Advisory Committee is chaired by Dr. Valerie Steele.

Iman, who was dressed by Van Noten, raffled off three items donated by Van Noten from his new collection.

The Belgian inspired luncheon menu featured gazpacho, poached salmon wrapped in cucumber, Belgian frites, and an assortment of fresh strawberry inspired desserts.
