"The Zebra Ball - Stars for the Stripes" Promoted Carcinoid Cancer Awareness

Wearing mostly black and white or Valentine red attire accessorized by zebra-striped awareness pins and bracelets, 150 guests gathered at The Peninsula Chicago to promote awareness of a rare form of cancer: carcinoid cancer.

In its third year, to date the event has raised over $100,000 to support the mission of The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation, Inc. (CCF, www.carcinoid.org). CCF’s mission is to promote awareness and to fund educational and research projects focused on carcinoid cancer and neuroendrocrine tumors. CCF was established in 1968.

Sharon Murphy Devereaux of Barrington Hills (event founder, daughter of a patient, and the CEO and President of CCF) was again successful in securing support from Mayor Richard M. Daley, who proclaimed February 14, 2009 as Chicago’s third Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Day.

Gary Zahara (co-host of “SportsLine”, a weekly sports talk show on WNDZ AM 750 every Sunday at 11AM) served as the 2009 event emcee and was joined by Dr. Sandy Goldberg (Contributing Nutritionist, NBC5Chicago) who also served as the 2008 event emcee. Norm Andrews lent his support as auctioneer.

Additional shows of support came from the honorary committee members including Soledad O’Brien (CNN anchor and inaugural event honorary chair), Johnny Morris (WBBM-TV Sports Director Emeritus and retired Chicago Bears legend), Katie Lorenz (Miss Illinois 2008), Bill Kurtis (Executive Producer, Kurtis Productions), Carrie Hightman (President AT&T Illinois, 2001-2006), Ashley Hatfield (Miss Illinois 2007), and Heidi Ekstrom (Miss Illinois 2006).

In the past, Kari Houston Jones (carcinoid cancer patient from Indiana) and Cecilia Kimberlin (VP Quality, Medical Products, Abbott) shared special patient-related stories. This year featured a patient story about Coach Don Meyer of NSU Men’s Basketball, who was diagnosed with carcinoid cancer then went on to break an NCAA record.

Fabulous auction items included stays at the following enticing locations: Jausiers, France; Carmel Valley Ranch, CA; Lancaster Arts Hotel, PA; and Trump International Hotel & Tower, Chicago. A stunning Waterford Crystal rose vase went to raffle winner Ms. Oken of Park Ridge. The lucky Grand Raffle winner was Kirk Benson of Wheaton, who receives American Airline vouchers and will choose between Hyatt-stay trip options to London, England; Hawaii; or Orlando, Florida. After dinner and auctions ended, guests danced to the music of NewDay.

Generous 2009 event sponsors included Baxter Healthcare; Brookfield Zoo, Pamela Dennis; The Devereaux Family; Emergency24, Inc.; The Kissel Family; John E. Morris; Patricia G. and Hugh G. Murphy; Rachael and Carlos Reyna; 7Search.com, Inc.; Debra and Michael Strauss; Tercica, Inc.; Monica and Richard Warner; and Website Magazine.

Carcinoid cancer and related neuroendocrine tumors (NETS) are small and slow-growing tumors found mostly in the gastrointestinal system, but can be found in other parts of the body such as the pancreas and the lung. Since most of these tumors grow very slowly, compared to other cancers, it usually takes many years before they become sizeable or cause symptoms. To save lives and improve the quality of life for patients, early detection is a key factor.

Fund-raising efforts to support CCF are on-going. Financial or in-kind donations can be pledged online at www.carcinoid.maestroweb.com or sent to The Zebra Ball, 155 Helm Road, Barrington Hills, Illinois 60010.
