Washington High Hall of Merit Induction Dinner

George Washington High School, a comprehensive four-year public school at 600 32nd Avenue designed by renowned architect Timothy Pflueger, had its groundbreaking in November 1934 and opened in August 1936 to serve San Francisco's Richmond District.

Lateefah Simon, Class of 1996, MacArthur Fellowship-winning advocate for underprivileged communities, and Barry Tompkins, Class of Spring 1957, award-winning 40-year veteran sports announcer and commentator, were the two alumni selected by the George Washington High School Alumni Association Board of Directors among a field of nine outstanding nominees for the 2011 induction to the GWHS Hall of Merit of distinguished alumni at The Cliff House in San Francisco on Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

Over 2200 students are currently enrolled at GWHS. The GWHS Alumni Association was founded during the 1951–52 school year, and the inaugural Hall of Merit inductees in 1970 included actress and Miss America 1955 Lee Meriwether S'53, singer Johnny Mathis F'53, Olympic swimmer Ann Curtis Cuneo S'44, the late All-Pro halfback Ollie Matson S'48, and U.S. Congressman Phillip Burton F'43. The Hall of Merit now numbers over 80 distinguished alumni including Maya Angelou, Alec Mapa, Marty Balin, and Danny Glover.

Police Dept. Chief; Anthony Ribera, Sr., S'63, former S.F. Police Dept.
